Johan came in from Orum. He’s been sick on his homestay with a fever for like 6 days so he came into lira to see some docs. When I went to pick him up from town the friggin car died and wouldn’t start-damn battery. Had a friend (bob from otino waa) come out and give me a jump then I met Johan at aanya and it died again. so Johan and nice Indian man gave me a push down the hill and I was able to pop the clutch and since the car dies whenever I slow down Johan had to jump in while I was moving down the hill AND I never once stopped driving through town. I arrived as a true Ugandan driver. Honk honk swerve swerve. And we got home. Ahhhh.

ON ADOPTION COST ASSISTANCESo I was talking to a friend yesterday about the adoption thing. I was saying I wanted to start up a fund in churches people could donate to in order to assist families interested in adopting, and she said she has a friend who actually did that but more as a non-profit I googled it and there are actually a number of adoption cost assistance programmes out there. Holt international is an adoption agency we respect and they have a page of assistance foundationshttp://www.holtinternational.org/waitingchild/finances.shtmlhttp://www.christianadopt.org/adoption/financing-adoption/ http://www.adopting.com/chi/financial-assistance.html http://bbinternationaladoption.com/adoption_funding.shtmlhttp://www.godsfamilies.org/http://www.cwa.org/http://www.adoptionavenues.org/adoption-financial-assistance.html http://www.bethany.org/A55798/bethanyWWW.nsf/0/5BC861840817259285256D9E0066DE24says you can get $12000 tax credit for older-child adoption http://www.adoption.org/adopt/international-adoption-low-cost.php good article http://www.babycenter.com/0_an-overview-of-adoption-costs_1341586.bc
http://www.theadoptionguide.com/cost/articles/how-much-does-adoption-cost____RE the Anti-homosexuality actHard to say whether the Anti-Homosexuality act will pass. On the one hand I’d say it is much too ridiculous to pass, but the reality is that it has a LOT of support. But of course if verbal opposition is likely to get you 7 years to life in prison, it is no wonder there is little of the other voice heard. There is a bishop who has tried listening to the other side and approaching in love, etc and he has been berated and almost to the point of excommunicated from the church of uganda for his non-militancy against homosexuals. While I agree with a strong stance (tho not death penalty!) against “Aggravated homosexuality” (with a minor, if you are undisclosed HIV+, if you are an authority figure), it disgusts me that straight rape, defilement (sex with a minor), and sex without disclosing HIV status are completely accepted and barely condemned by the church or state. When we try to talk to reverends around us there is an overwhelming acceptance of male abuse of women but not male to male (and interestingly no one ever thinks of female-female relationships). My disgust of the church has been overwhelming (spiking last week with yet another case of really crappy leadership encouraging abuse of a woman). We try to engage in conversations about love, restoration, the Gospel of grace, etc but to be honest culture speaks louder and culture is being clothed in religious platitudes. We do this in the US of course too, but it is especially evident in this case here. Anyway those are my 2 cents on the happenings There is also a marriage act that may be passed soon which has some interesting implications but absolutely no clear path on implementation. I get exhausted at the thought and really think I should walk into an MP meeting or a sitting of the High Court and knock some heads together. In a non-violent peaceful Mennonite way…of course. **** 011109 SundayGULU!!!

211009 Wednesday
I was sore from the cow goring but then achiness was spreading and yesterday I thought I had malaria- fever chills headache bodyache. Tested negative tho. Dale says the cow just knocked my parasites loose! Haha. Dunno. I slept almost 12 hours last night and the night before and the temp thing keeps changing. I was so cold last night and there was no power for a hot shower or anything so I piled on clothes and blankets and made dale snuggle me. Then I woke up and was freaking burning up. Oh the life. Went to a totally useless doctor – Kampala International Hospital branch clinic- who really only knows malaria and fatigue. Nice. wondering if I should take a typhoid test. we have a british dr staying behind us who is currently away but I think home soon, so I figure I’ll hunt him down when he returns and see if he has suggestions. Went to fapad in afternoon and met with Oriem, a lawyer, and talked about a variety of fascinating topics and the work of fapad. Pizza was sick for a couple days from eating bad entrails he found at bishops house, but he was better this morning and we walked. BIBLE study on the topic of anger. Listened to sermon from the meeting house and discussed. It was a good one.Power spike burnt out our voltage regulator, plug and inverter. Ugh. ****201009 TuesdayWasn’t sure if I was supposed to go in this morning to fapad or not so I waited for dale to call to tell me my new supervisor has come. So I went in around 11 by boda. Wasn’t feeling well in the morning so took home test for malaria. Negative, but I think our tests are wonky. Felt worse so went to the clinic in town (KIH) and had a test. Negative. Asked to see a doctor. He said “Not malaria”. I said “I know”. then he looked at me blankly.“Any other ideas?” “fatigue. Take panadol.”Seriously, I haven’t been doing anything for the last 18months, so I do not think it is fatigue!!!Pretty sure the guy isn’t even a real doctor. Had lunch at pork joint with brian. Actually I just watched dale and brian lunch. Good times…better if I wasn’t feeling sick. Went back to work after lunch and met with head of social work (Joy) and talked to her for a while about what they do and then read some reports from a UNICEF project that has been going on a while. A little info on FAPAD- facilitation for peace and development. They are a 5 yr old org here in Lira that our country rep put us onto. They began doing human rights work, land conflicts, etc, but have grown quickly to now doing everything from child rights to livelihoods (food + ag distributions) etc. To be honest I think they probably grew too broad too fast, which is really common here. A donor says “we fund X” so your org starts doing X to get the funding.Anyway, dale is doing tech stuff with them (Website, setting accounts on quickbooks, etc) and I will be working with the sexual/gender based violence programmes and good governance. Really I have no idea yet what this means but I am sure it will take shape soon Home and slept about 6pm! Yep, 12 hours of sleeping. 191009 Monday
No Power. Stayed around the house.I am sore. Damned cow.
I have a fist size swollen bruise on my leg and worse it is on the wobbly part of my thigh so every step hurts as it wobbles. Tmi?
And then the rest of me hurts too. seriously I can’t really remember how it all happened or why my arm, side and leg and back are all so sore. Whatever.
I feel old.
And I feel like having hamburger.
No, I don’t. but I feel like making hamburger and giving it to pizza.
No, I don’t but I feel like taking a stick and beating the crap out of the bishops cowherd for repeatedly tying animals where I told him not to in my yard.
Yes. I do. For discussion— http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8309508.stm181009 Sunday
Me vs CowSo a cow was with its new calf in my yard tied next to Pizza and I untied it to guide it to the bishops property and it just ran and me and chucked me- about 6-10’ I’d say. Honestly I have no idea where it hit me or what exactly happened. I was up against the power pole quite sure I was about to be trampled and yelled to Dale. Fortunately the cow decided that was not the day to kill me. I pulled a muscle along my side so turning or lifting my leg etc are all painful and I have a fist size bruise on my other leg.

WHY I LOVE MY BIBLE STUDY GROUP: a little e-discussion
Subject: Embryo adoption. Seriously?
http://bethany.org/A55798/bethanyWWW.nsf/c79edbd86c517a1d852569c800702556/d1ff3643671899988525727500728cf2?OpenDocument
-Susan
Wow.
Really. WOW.
OK so I’ve often thought about this, but I’ll throw the question out to the group-
What is the soul-status of a fertilised egg on ice? Millions or billions of these things in a freezer. Thoughts??
-marika
In normal terms, I say that life begins at conception. But, this is tricky. Is it equivalent to a little embryo coma?
This is all gonna be guess work… but it actually might unearth any ethical problems that might be there.
-dale
So does that mean we Christian women might have a normal obligation to “un-coma” these children and bring them all to birth?
We could start a new ngo- “Wombs for Jesus”
-marikaOh, this could be good. Have you tried googling it? Maybe “Wombs for Jesus” already exists. I mean, if there can be an NGO-campaign called “Adopt a Clitoris” (not kidding. http://wrongingrights.blogspot.com/2009/05/adopt-clitoris.html) why not one called “Adopt a Frozen Soul”?
But, seriously. The adoption agency (Bethany) is a Christian agency. I thought maybe they were against the embryo/invitro-thing and so, to make things “right” they decided to start the ‘adopt an embryo’ option. Not so. They also offer invitro (sp?). Something seems fishy here to me. Isn’t this just another way for them to make money??
-Susan
Definitely agree something fishy. I have big ethical issues with pro-lifers getting invitro particularly for this reason (ie if you believe life begins when sperm hits egg, then you are creating lots of souls on ice, etc). Had lots of Christians who are pro-ivf attack me on that tho (tho I have never understood their rationale) Basically because of the intense emotion that often surrounds a woman’s “Right to have children” through whatever means possible, ethically questionable or not. No kidding hard core pro-lifers blasting me for questioning Christians having IVF. Go figure. Pretty shocked on the adopt a clitoris campaign. Do they hand out shirts? -Marika

Putting things in perspective. ____
Been thinking about fostering lately. We have friends working in orphanages here and orphanages in Africa are totally “in” with western churches, and fostering outside your family is not. I just wrote down a future Bible study topic for our group here “Should (or shouldn’t) all qualified Christians foster or adopt?” Dale and I agreed that we could do emergency fostering (I think it is a week or two max for kids who just come out from their home situations and before they get put in homes). A lot of course would depend on jobs and all, but seeing as I suck at committing, I think I could do short term. Anyway, I came across this website below and thought I’d share it since it is about advocating to get churches involved. Why don’t we ever hear sermons encouraging people to foster/adopt? Why are ALL those verses watered down to something nebulous as opposed to something VERY concrete??http://www.olivecrest.org/site/PageServer?pagename=gen_SafeFamilies_becomeachurch This new church I am into did a series called soul sisters and 3 weeks were on Naomi and Ruth and the pastor talked a lot about the ways the Torah mandated the community to care for the widow and orphan (like not going over your field twice and leaving an edge). It has made me think. We as the western church seem very happy to give money to an orphanage project but many less people are willing to open their homes short term or long to actually hands-on care for kids who aren’t theirs. ****011009 ThursdayZanzibar was fantastic! Hard to come back I think I am too much in the wind-down-mode. Looking to the end rather than being productive in the now. ugh,Back in lira this week but power has been off every day almost all day so I have only been in the office for a few hours all week. 280909 MondayBIBLE STUDY at B+Ss place
topic: talk about the purpose of meeting together like for church. does church attendance matter (why/why not)? What if all the churches that are options are defective?
Think it leads itself into what “church” actually is or is supposed to be. Are we already a church? How much of church selection is us ‘enjoying’ or feeling comfortable or fitting? How much heresy is too much heresy? Are we supporting ‘bad’ churches when we frequent them?
Brought my new neighbours- dr. Andy and Ceri- who are living next door to us for the next 3 months along. 14-200909ZANZIBAR!!! 040909 FridayI am off to orum today to check out johans homestay option. Fun fun- actually some ‘workish’ thing to doOrum trip went well. Think Johan will have a good experience. CPA drove us and dang the guy drove fast! It was nice to have a driver really and not feel responsible for all the near fatalities! The host fam is catholic, guy has 2 wives, 4 kids from 1st wife and 5 orphans but there were like 20 kids around- some kids with their own kids. But he’ll have his own hut and lots of land to work! The guy has 10 acres of cassava, 8 of rice and cows and whatnot. He sent us home with 2 chickens (1 rooster, 1 hen) and a TON of maize. We gave most of the maize to the CPA guys and traded the rooster with our co-worker for another hen. Haven’t picked her up yet tho. But now I’ll be back to 5 hens! Yay. Ok something is on fire. Gonna go check it out.

Had veg afghani which was good. so nice to have spicy food! *******
220709 WedWent to an “emergency food relief” meeting today. Ok long story short. 35 people are SAID to have died from famine in a few subcounties around us. To be honest, I think that is supposed to create sympathy in me, but the whole thing is hype and exploitation and I can’t even feel grief about people who did die. It is time for the yearly distribution of emergency food aid. Yes, yearly. Why? Because people have been, and are still, selling off all their food to sudan where prices are high. Why the hell not when we, the ngos, keep giving money and food?Food is literally being loaded up and shipped out of the very subcounties they are saying people are starving in. and actually no one has died of starvation. Some children ate poisonous cassava and they are saying they ate it because of famine. I think children often die from eating things they shouldn’t and I wonder if any more children have died now than usually do or if these kids are being politicised for handouts. Others who died were HIV+ and they say “weakened by famine”- makes me suspicious. People DO die from aids despite everyone’s flippancy towards it. Truth is no one has actually starved to death, but read the newspapers here or listen to the radio and you’d think we were ethiopia in the 80s! The whole thing makes me so very angry. How does someone who wants to be generous do it without playing into to someone’s get-rich scheme? *******
210709 TuMEETING WITH BISHOPdidn’t go well. He brought up the flood relief plan AGAIN- the one where we had excess and sent money back to our org. He basically wants to tell me I made people starve when we fed everyone exactly as we said we would. He was a bit of a jerk towards us in the meeting and we both left ‘in a mood’. Nothing was really resolved and all it did was to totally demotivate us even further. I was amazed though at how blatantly he said we needed to grease reverend palms in whatever plan we did. He said that there are priests who are not well paid so if we do a relief project some of it has to go to them. HELLO?? The diocese makes a hell of a lot of money and the bishop has 7 vehicles and a mansion and he wants north American SIMPLE LIVING MENNONITES to pay his priests? Kiss my ^*&. He was complaining about someone else’s distribution of cassava stems and how they were shipped dry and admitted (which we already knew) that he had taken loads of them for himself and planted them in his garden. And in the corner of his office sat an ‘operation Christmas child’ box. Samaritans purse gave a large shipment of them to the children’s min dept and of course the bishop took his ‘tithe’. I am absolutely sick to death and am totally demotivated to do anything at all. We are talking about maybe running our programme through the mothers union department which has a separate account and better staff. I would feel a bit less dirty about that, but still what do you do when really in your heart you just want to burn the whole place down? I don’t think Jesus would mind much if I did. Pray for me. *******

So I am listening to a speech I heard in 2006 by Olara Ottuna at a children at risk conference in Anaheim. Supposedly he might try to run for president as the UPC candidate in 2011. So I heard him in 2006, knowing what I could about Uganda through reading. Listening to it again now I have a whole other opinion. The statistics he is quoting are not verified anywhere like 40-50% HIV rates in camps(really 9-11%)Typical-12 hours waiting for 1 jerrycan of water, some wait 3 days.4000 people per one latrine (one per 20 families).50% stunting (actually 16%)72000 people in 1 sq km in Pabbo camp (63,000, couldn’t find dimensions) Very interesting that he hasn’t been in Uganda since 1980!! That doesn’t come up in his speech. He even says that “No action has been taken in Northern Uganda” regarding the UN. Interesting. And by interesting, I mean not true. He never mentioned Kony in his speech and only talks about genocide done by the government against the acholi people by forcing them into camps, and by purposefully sending HIV+ soldiers to the camps to rape and infect the people.Very very interesting. 080609 MnClass with Emily, Dramas, Class cancelled for town councilLeft Kitgum at noon. Got to Gulu at 2:30. Left at 4:30. Arrived around 7:30 in Lira.Dale had come to pick me up, feeling bad that it was dark and rainy. Very sweet since he is feeling quite sick. Sadly, as he was waiting for me he ran up to get airtime from sankofa (and my phone battery was dead!) and locked the keys in the car. So another hour and help from friends (Brian &Susan) and a coat hanger and we were finally on our way back home. I hate driving here at night, esp on the main road. It is my nightmare and causes much profanity. Ugh. *******070609 SundayKITGUMWent to church in town with emily’s co-worker. It was interesting. Started at 9. A small Pentecostal church. Some observations- only 40-50 people, but they had a building and a keyboard. Talked about the need to dress well so people will listen to your ‘gospel’. Said that God doesn’t use the sick, poor or weak, but fixes you first so God can use you. Lots of money talk. Disheartening. San g 4 songs which took about 45 minutes. Dale Sick*******060609 SatTRIP TO KITGUMGeez. I left the house at 8. Walked to british corner until I caught a boda. Went to bus part and actually caught a taxi heading out to Gulu. It was an old and very decrepit car! Windows didn’t open. Doors didn’t open. Speedometer broken. Exhaust entering car. No power, no acceleration, etc. so wasn’t too shocked when it broke down- fortunately near a fuel station. We were 14 in this small car amazingly. Crammed! But I still drifted off to sleep. Probably the fumes. Got transferred to a van taxi half way (Kamdini) and after a flat tyre finally reached Gulu. From there I caught a bus to Kitgum. But of course it was more than 2 hours of waiting for the driver to show up. Ugh. So I arrived about 4ish. A VERY long trip. Seriously on a map it is 100 miles. Should not take this long!!! *******050609 FriMet with Edward & Allyn (CRWRC) and Paul, Jacob, George, peter. Good to hear what plans they are making. 310509 Sunday *******300509 SaturdayGodfrey’s funeralFound out this morning that there is a requiem prayer for Godfrey in Lira Cathedral. We decided it was better to go to this rather than the burial on Monday, so we went. It was all in lwo, so we didn’t catch much. But it was of course very sad to see his wife and kids and those who were close to him mourning. We were told later that he had some sort of brain tumour, then spleen and lung failure. Really, not sure what caused it all, but it was basically a month between first symptoms and his death. Really rough. I guess he was about 40. *******290509 FrActually met with jacob- gasp“Sorry I missed the AGM, I was caught up with the bishop’s father’s funeral.”Umm, he died after the AGM!!*******280509 ThDinner at sankofa- well tea AND a free cappuccino : )LOST season finale with B+S******* 260509 TuesdayWoke up at 6:30 and got the dog who seemed pretty happy to have been out all night. Puked a nasty mass of cow guts. *******250509 MondayWent for a walk. Small loop with dog, people were at the diocese early. not sure why.Ran into calvin(peters son) on way back. Said he wanted to “talk” to us in the Oh-too-familiar-way that I know has something to do with needing school fees. Tis the season. Showed up to office at 8:30 and doors locked, no one there. Sat for a while waiting. Eventually calvin came over to talk and told us that the bishops dad had died on Friday and everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) had gone to the burial. Sorry, and thanks for telling us people. Really a 2.5 cent text was too hard?Anyway. So we went home. Calvin came. He wants to go be a doctor and needs 3million shillings a year for 5 years and so, came to talk to us. on the one hand, at least he wasn’t saying he wants funding for this term and needs it today. On the other hand, really? FELGONA came to work today. I guess she is the new housekeeper since betty didn’t come yesterday (ARGH!)I do hate training new people with some language gaps, but I need to remember how much I like the final product when it all runs like clockwork. She doesn’t ask questions though, and says “yes” when she has no idea what I asked her to do, and those things annoy the heyl out of me. So I wrote up a daily task roster that I will walk her through on Friday when she comes again and hopefully that will reduce frustrations. Dead calf in bishops yard. In evening, someone started cutting it up and pizzas collar broke. He ran in around 8pm carrying some organ. Later brought a… heart? Really gross. Gave him the worst gas. Like seriously the WORST. Dale and I bought took a pack of gum to sleep with to try to change the smell of the room. Around 1:30 the dog started scratching the door. I was worried he was gonna puke in the house, so I let him out and set my alarm for 6am to bring him back before the chickens *******240509 SundayMalaria- slept******* 230509 SaturdayMalaria sleptNo testers at the health centre. It was sprinkling when we left but turned into an absolute downpour mid walk. It was really fun. Pizza may not have thought so, but I really loved it. Lots of people under shelters thinking me quite mad. Came home and took a ‘shower’ under the rain water tank since we still don’t have water. No BettySo I think Betty has quit. This we will consider that 10,000 advance we gave her as severance pay!Dale called her and she said she wasn’t coming, but decided not to call and tell us. Sad because things were going well and we liked and trusted her. Not sure what is up and don’t really believe what she is telling us. either she got a new job, (and really, I’d be happy for her is she did!) or I don’t know what. MEETINGSo this weekend was a busy one for the diocese with the synod meeting and ordinations. This morning after a short devo there was a short staff meeting where people talked about it. Was interesting (and disturbing) to hear their responses.High/lowlightsSo it seemed the whole thing was hectic and unprepared- as ever. I found a report from a meeting in 2007saying the exact same things about ordinations- need more planning ahead of time!Quite sure the next report will say the same!Jaky was saying for his 20 yrs in service with the diocese, nothing has changed. Very discouraging. -“Women didn’t do what they were supposed to”-“They weren’t bringing chairs for people. I don’t know what is wrong with these women; they even wanted chairs to sit in!” -introductions droned on all day-PA system arrived midway through and they began setting up amidst speeches. -clan chief (won nyaci) sent a representative who was very put out that there wasn’t a seat reserved for him…even though he showed up hours late!-not enough chairs-no one would volunteer to help tear down tents and chairs. Had to pay the youth to do it. No one would help for free. (way to go church).-only had one vehicle (the infamous tipper). Complaints of everyone ordering around driver. You can see why we skipped the events!! Random other gripes from others:No trash cans in my officeNo one mops my officeNo one wipes down my chairDo we have a secretary or a cook. I gave my letters to be types and they haven’t come back *******100509 SundayThe small loop with pizza, then back to bed.No WaterNo PowerRain!!! Wahooo!Today is the ordination of 14 Reverends. Again, I am staying away. Big show. Big money. All about the gifts. It is hard to be in this place and remember what the church could/should be. *******090509 SaturdayWake up callAfter my walk I went back to bed which is a rare feat for me. Got a wake up call from Jacob though as they were trying to print things in the office but couldn’t get it to work. Seems they brought in a generator from somewhere to make the copies. I never cease to be amazed at the lack of planning here!!Today is the synod meeting and I am staying well away. No BettyShe was supposed to come at 10:30. Around 12:30 she shows up wanting an advance and her pay but isn’t going to work today! Says there is some interview for a ‘weekend’ job she has to go to. Very irritating. No WaterNo Power Firework failSo MTN (Phone company) had advertised that they were gonna have fireworks tonight at 9pm in the park in front of sankofa. So we decided we would go down there to watch. We left the house at 8 to start driving and could see the fireworks in town as we pulled out of the gate *******080509 FridayNo BettyShe called to say she had to go to pay fees for her course or something. Will come tomorrow. Power went off at 10ish again. ugh. Lots of prep this week for tomorrow’s synod meeting. LOTs of copies being made and such. After constantly shaking the toner cartridge to eek out the last bit of ink they finally replaced it and are now back in full printing more (except when the power is out of course.) *******070509 ThursdayWindy day with the MOST amazing sunrise! It was like the clouds were kindling and the sun was fire blazing across the sky! So beautiful!Power went off around 10. Stayed off until 4pm! So we went to town to try to get more seedling, bought some food, got pork scraps for the animals, came back. Still no power, so we went and flew the kite while it was windy. Was really fun! there was a hawk in the sky who was very curious about the kite and was flying around it and hovering nearby. We were just waiting for it to try to attack it!Came back to the office when the power returned for an hour or two.Went home and played aerobie

Worked on the fence a bit more. *******050509 TuesdayCINCO DE MAYOMade a vat of salsa and chips and went to Brian & Susan’s for a little party. Listened to some musica latina and just hung out snacking. Was really nice! *******040509 MondayMaking progress. Finally mapping my way out of the hole of despair and into a plan. Well done marika. *******030509 SundaySo even though it is my morning ‘off’ walking, pizza just sat there so cute with his muzzle on not going anywhere, so I caved and took him for a small loop, after which we both fell back asleep until after 10. Nice! Went for Thera at the bus park around 1 and we went and had our hair done at aunty sharons. Had such a good talk with Aunty Sharon. Left me thinking…a lot! Her story- she is from Moroto, Karamoja but married a Lango (from here). She was his third wife. I think there were 4 total. But she said he was constantly roaming to many women. Karamajong usually require a LOT of cows to marry off their young women. Her parents decided not to demand cows but instead told him to take good care of her and if he abused her then they would come demanding. A position I was really excited about, and very rare! But there is a down side to such a position, I came to learn. Her husband died five years ago and while she is legally allowed to stay on her husband’s land with her children, her inlaws kicked her out. They only accepted the first wife who “we wasted our cows on”. they said their marriage wasn’t legitimate because no cows were exchanged. She has taken it to court and to the paramount chief but to no avail. It has left her (rightly so) with a real bitterness to the Lango people and she said she would rather have a rope tied around her neck than have her daughters marry a man from here. Even though they are only in high school, she sends them regularly up to Karamoja hoping they’ll find their future husbands up there. *******020509 SaturdaySo frustrated with the cows we finally ran a string of barbed wire up. Hopefully it will help! *******010509 FridayLABOUR DAY!Took patrick to bus station. Remember why I hate driving. People are idiots. Nearly got rear ended in front of station. I was stopped waiting for guy in front to pull into station and watched a guy behind me come within a hair of my back window. JOLENE’s HOUSE COOLING PARTYI figure if it is called a house warming party when you move in, it should be called a house cooling party when you move out.

by Dr. Margo G. Houts
Professor of Religion and Theology I was twenty-two and just a year out of college when the issue of gender inclusive language for God first grabbed my attention, via a bumper sticker, no less: “Trust in God–She will provide.” I can still recall my immediate sense that God was being diminished, even insulted, and I dismissed it as a feminist ploy. All my life, I had faithfully attended worship, Sunday School and Bible studies. Not once had I knowingly seen or heard any feminine language for God. God had always been to me “Father,” “King,” “Jesus,” “Lord,” and “He.” I had always just assumed that God, like Jesus, bore masculine gender. I saw no reason to deviate from the exclusively masculine language that I had inherited since childhood, language that felt comfortable and natural to me. Then in seminary, I made a shocking discovery: the Bible itself uses feminine language for God. No longer could I simply dismiss it as a radical feminist invention. Why, I began to wonder, do inspired authors use it, why did I not know about this before, and what difference will knowing it make? For the first time, I began to ponder what it was about my social location that made feminine language for God strike me as a diminishment rather than an enrichment. More questions pressed me: Does God have gender(s)? How does religious language work–do gendered words attribute gender to God? These and other inquiries have led me to try to incorporate the Bible’s own example of inclusivity in the way I think, talk to and speak about God. Biblical inclusivity is increasingly finding its way into our churches. For example, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) incorporated the divine feminine into a 1990 confessional statement: “Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.” (The Book of Confessions, 10.3) This affirmation is eminently true to the biblical witness, for relationally, God is like a mother in Isaiah 49:15 and like a father in Luke 15:11-32. We who seek to follow the biblical example must first know what that example is. Some of the texts which started me rethinking the way I conceptualize God follow. A: Female images for God (drawn from women’s biological activity)
1. God as a Mother:
a. a woman in labor (Isa. 42:14) whose forceful breath is an image of divine power . God is threatening to come against Israel in power, a power likened to the forceful air expelled from the lungs of a woman who is in the final throes of labor. Calvin misunderstood Isaiah’s intent and construed this as an image of maternal tenderness!
b. a mother suckling her children (Num. 11:12)
c. a mother who does not forget the child she nurses (Isa. 49:14-15)
d. a mother who comforts her children (Isa. 66:12-13)
e. a mother who births and protects Israel (Isa. 46:3-4). In contrast to idol worshippers who carry their gods on cattle, God carries Israel in the womb. The message to the people is two-fold: it demonstrates God’s superiority over other gods, and reiterates the divine promise to support and redeem. In short, God’s maternal bond of compassion and maternal power to protect guarantee Israel’s salvation.
f. a mother who gave birth to the Israelites (Dt. 32:18) The biased translation of the Jerusalem Bible (”fathered you”) obscures the feminine action of the verb, more accurately rendered “gave you birth”:
JB: You forget the Rock who begot you, unmindful now of the God who fathered you.
NRSV: You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.
The Hebrew word in the first line can be translated as either “begot” (male activity) or “bore” (female activity); the context must provide the key. The word in the second line can only refer to female activity. Scholars have taken these two lines either as a male and a female image of God back-to-back, or they take both of them as female, due to the way this verse is located in the overall poetic structure of Deuteronomy 32.
g. a mother who calls, teaches, holds, heals and feeds her young (Hosea 11:1-4) This poem is in the first person, where in Hebrew there is no distinction between male and female forms; the speaker can be either male or female. The series of activities are those that a mother would be likely to do: “it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms, but they did not know that I healed them. I was to them like those who lift infants [lit., suckling children] to their cheeks [OR: who ease the yoke on their jaws]; I bent down to them and fed them.” (NRSV)
Given the context, it is possible that Hosea is indirectly presenting Yahweh as the mother over against the fertility goddess mother figure of the Canaanite religion that he is challenging. The images belong in pairs. Israel is presented as a wife in ch. 2 and as a son in ch. 11, that is, as female and male in tandem. It may be that Hosea is making the point that Yahweh alone is God by presenting Yahweh as the husband in ch. 2 and as the mother in ch. 11.
2. Other maternal references: Ps. 131:2; Job. 38:8, 29; Prov. 8:22-25; 1 Pet. 2:2-3, Acts 17:28. B: Feminine images for God (drawn from women’s cultural activity).
1. God as a seamstress making clothes for Israel to wear (Neh. 9:21).
2. God as a midwife attending a birth (Ps. 22:9-10a, 71:6; Isa. 66:9) (midwife was a role only for women in ancient Israel).
3. God as a woman working leaven into bread (Lk. 13:18-21). This feminine image is equivalent to the image of God as masculine in the preceding parable of the mustard seed.
4. God as a woman seeking a lost coin (Lk. 15:8-10).This feminine image is equivalent to the image of God as masculine in the preceding parable of the shepherd seeking a lost sheep. Both Luke 13 and 15 contain paired masculine and feminine images for God, drawn from activities of Galilean peasants. C: Additional examples of the divine feminine.
1. Female bird imagery. Yahweh is described by an analogy to the action of a female bird protecting her young (Ps. 17:8, 36:7, 57:1, 91:1, 4; Isa. 31:5; Dt. 32:11-12).
a. The eagle: Dt. 32:11-12: “As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: so the Lord alone did lead Jacob ….” (KJV). The female eagle, both larger and stronger than the male, does the bulk of the incubation of the eggs as well as the hunting. She is the one who bears the eaglets on her wings when it is time for them to leave the nest. In a sudden movement, she swoops down to force them to fly alone, but always stays near enough to swoop back under them when they become too weary to fly on their own. It is a powerful image of God nurturing and supporting us when we are weak, yet always encouraging us to grow and mature. Cf. Ex. 19:4, “I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself,” and Job 39:27-30.
b. The hen: Mt. 23:37 (par. Lk. 13:34; cf. Ruth 2:12): “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not.” In his lament over Jerusalem, Jesus employs feminine imagery. Whereas the magnificent eagle is associated with light, sun, height, mobility and exteriority, the lowly hen is “associated with the shadows and darkness of the henhouse, and with depth and stillness and interiority beneath the mothering wings” (V. Mollenkott, The Divine Feminine [Crossroad, 1987], 93). Each image illuminates a different, important aspect of God’s relation to us.
2. God as Mother Bear (Hosea 13:8), a fierce image associated with the profound attachment of the mother to her cubs. God’s rage against those who withhold gratitude is that of a bear “robbed of her cubs.”
3. Holy Spirit (in Hebrew, feminine; in Greek, neuter) is often associated with women’s functions: the birthing process (Jn. 3:5; cf. Jn. 1:13, 1 Jn. 4:7b, 5:1, 4, 18), consoling, comforting, an eschatological groaning in travail of childbirth, emotional warmth, and inspiration. Some ancient church traditions refer to the Holy Spirit in feminine terms (the Syriac church used the feminine pronoun for the Holy Spirit until ca. 400 C.E.; a 14th c. fresco depicting the Trinity at a church near Munich, Germany images the Holy Spirit as feminine). As we seek to follow biblical inclusivity, let us also affirm the consistent witness of the church, namely, that God is neither feminine nor masculine (gender), neither male nor female (sex). God, who is transcendent Spirit, possesses no physical body, yet accommodates to human limitations by using physical, relational, gender-laden images for self-disclosure. Some of those are feminine. Inasmuch as God inspired the biblical authors to be inclusive, who are we not to be?
